After two years of pandemic-born style suppression, consumers are breaking free with a rebellious sensibility for Winter 2022/2023.  This season, hairstyles exude a winter weather nonconformity, vibing a free spirited, effortless, and unprecedented cold weather style.  From a 70’s Shag haircut reinvention to an unconventional brunette hair color, we add to the mix seasonal solutions in the form of equally revolutionary ingredients to tackle winter nemeses hat hair, dry scalp, static electricity and more.

70’s Shag Reboot

The carefree hair trends of the 70’s resurface with an update on the classic Shag haircut complete with Bottleneck or Curtain Bangs.  Not any one specific length or texture, today’s Shag reboot is more of a feel or mood translating into lots of airy space throughout the cut.  No heavy weight lines and instead released layers, lots of movement, and visual dimension created not only by the cut itself but by various color techniques.

To get this light, breezy, 70’s-esque trend, our Stylist’s apply their precision skills gleaned from our Volumetric The Pelusi Method organic haircutting system.  Our goal is to create a custom cut for every client, taking into consideration texture, density, growth patterns, fall lines, and the shape of the head.  We also enlist the creative genius of our Philip Pelusi Artistic Elite Designers, Elite Colorists and Trend Team Members to help create and train our signature color techniques to support this trend.

To accompany the 70’s Shag Reboot for this winter season, we recommend a shampoo update as well for the best scalp and styling results.  We recommend adding a daily or weekly application of a moisturizing shampoo for the winter season.  Winter air, and therefore the hair and scalp, have less moisture in them causing dry itchy scalp, drier looking hair, and static electricity.  So, it’s important to deposit moisture binding ingredients.  One ingredient we love at Philip Pelusi is Cassia Angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide.  Derived from the seeds of the Alexandrian Senna plant, Cassia Angustifolia herb is a potent moisturizer that binds moisture to similar levels as Hyaluronic Acid and has been proven to smooth and protect hair from everyday stressors.

Cassia Angustifolia Seed Polysaccharide is one of the star ingredients in our P2 by Philip Pelusi Moisturesheen Shampoo that gently cleanses while depositing the hydrating ingredients included in our Pelusi Hair Matrix Blend consisting of Matricaria, Asafetida, Blackberry, Sage, Horseradish, and Grapeseed.  Hair and scalp will simply perform better and feel healthier.  And although P2 Moisturesheen Shampoo does not build body, its ingredients provide weightless hydration so it can used on any texture.  For an extra boost of hydration, we recommend its mate P2 by Philip Pelusi Moisturesheen Conditioner.

Next, we go off script and recommend an application of one of our most popular products generally used for summer sun protection and all year styling.  Our P2 by Philip Pelusi PotionSmart Styling Treatment is a combination weightless hydrating groom and UV protectant.  From a styling standpoint, it’s weightless, no hold, feels like nothing on the hair finish is perfect for this 70’s Shad Reboot trend.

But its P2 Potion’s incredible hydrating ability that makes it an amazing winter static stopper too.  Our proprietary Pelusi Hair Matrix Blend adds six natural humectants including Matricaria, Asafetida, Blackberry, Grapeseed, Horseradish and Sage that play quadruple duty as hydrators, antioxidants, UV filters, and strengtheners.  P2 Potion detangles hair like a dream and can be applied wet or dry to help halt static.

P2 Potion can be used as a standalone styling product on any texture.  But for universal winter hair and scalp benefits, a small dime to nickel size amount can be applied to damp hair prior to any other styling product then styled as usual.  Apply pea size drops as needed to calm static on dry hair too.

Bronze Brunettes

We’ve seen the recent demand for bronze hair color but predominately for blondes.  But for this winter brunettes want in on this trend taking the moniker Bronze Brunette.  This hue has a deep, rich neutral brunette base that serves as the backdrop for warm caramel, cognac, or honey gold hues in the form of balayage and the now popular again 90’s chunky highlights.  The idea is to add specks of gold to what sometimes can be flat brunette shades.

Bronze Brunette hair fabric should look incredibly healthy and luxe.  To get hair and scalp in great condition during the winter months, we recommend taking a skin care approach by getting the scalp’s microbiome in balance.  Interestingly a beneficial digestive ingredient, Probiotics, is key to this endeavor.  We mirror this in our Tela Hair Immunity Complex comprised of both Prebiotics and Probiotic Enzymes derived from Fermented Kelp Extract.  It is the star of our cutting-edge Tela Beauty Organics Life Forceby Philip Pelusi Collection.

Probiotics help balance scalp’s microflora in a similar fashion as how Probiotics work on skin, our largest organ, and our digestive system.  The scalp must have a healthy balance of specific microflora, good bacteria, or it cannot function at its optimal level and prematurely ages.  Our Tela Hair Immunity Complex helps scalp rebalance its microflora helping provide a healthy scalp environment for hair growth.  Two of the products in this collection include our Tela Life Force Probiotic Scalp Scrub and Tela Life Force™ Probiotic Hair Mask.  They give hair and scalp the relief and preventative measures needed to combat the effects of winter weather.

An easy way to get a glow-up for winter is with a bronze haircolor.

Tela Life ForceProbiotic Scalp Scrub also features Organic Sugar Cane Granules that slide through Organic Milk Thistle Oil helping lift dead skin cells, dirt, debris from scalp and hair while depositing luxurious hydration as they dissolve.  This helps create a cleaner, healthier scalp environment and better deposit of other nutritional scalp ingredients in the scrub and mask.  Organic Milk Thistle Oil provides moisture, thermal protection, and antioxidant protection to help inhibit scalp inflammation and hair color fadage.  Our scrub should be used on soaking wet hair as a pre-shampoo treatment.

The Tela Life Force™ Probiotic Hair Mask is an anti-color fade, restorative mask that creates gleaming shine and color vibrancy while leaving hair full body and feeling healthy.  It also contains our Patent Pending Hydro Charged Pelusi Ceramide Complex.  This cosmeceutical breakthrough, available exclusively at Philip Pelusi, is a microemulsion of plant derived ceramides that mimic lipids in the cuticle layer of the hair.  It reinforces the cuticle layer’s adhesion to hair’s cortex by replacing missing ceramides.  This therefore helps to bond color treated hair’s often damaged cuticle layer to the cortex, so color molecules are also sealed in below.

This creates a smoother exterior hair surface, so hair feels renewed, stronger, silky, shiny, and lustrous.  The Tela Life Force™ Probiotic Hair Mask should be used one to two times per week after cleansing and left on the hair for 5 to 10 minutes then rinsed thoroughly.  For optimal results this process should be done several times in the weeks leading up to a color service and of course as part of the guest’s regular maintenance afterwards.

Both products can be used alone, paired with all Philip Pelusi products, or used as part of our new in-salon Tela Life Force Root to End Recovery Hair and Scalp Treatment with our Tela Universe Signature Scalp Massage.

Balaclavas Hats

In addition to chic winter hairstyle trends, we must also consider the harsh conditions hair and scalp are subjected to in colder, drier, winter air.  One hair nemesis is winter hats with one of the most popular for 2022 being Balaclavas Hats.  This style covers almost the entire head, neck, and depending on the design, part of the face.  But hairstyles are easily destroyed while under any hat, crushing the hair as well as exacerbating static electricity caused by dry winter air and indoor heat.  This is something our guests contend with each winter, so we offer seasonal solutions.

Winter hats work well with current styling trends such as textured loose waves and high or low knots or buns, but it’s the post and preemptive use of moisture binding ingredients that is the key to help prevent and stop static.  Almost 50 years ago we started enhancing our formulations with the still revolutionary moisture binding powerhouse Hyaluronic Acid in our P2 by Philip Pelusi Deep Hydrating Treatment and P2 Lite Leave In Conditioner, making us the first to use skincare ingredients in haircare products.  Of course, at Philip Pelusi, we only use plant derived sources of Hyaluronic Acid.

When we are young, our bodies are at their highest production level of Hyaluronic Acid.  Internally it is an incredible lubricant for our knees, elbows, eyes, and skin.  As we age, our body’s ability to produce Hyaluronic Acid naturally declines and that’s why older skin is generally much drier than younger skin.  Dry winter air has a similar effect, pulling moisture from the hair and scalp.  Hyaluronic Acid can hold up to 1,000 times its molecular weight in water and naturally draws and binds moisture to whatever surface it is on.

Our P2 Deep Hydrating Hair and Scalp Treatment helps lock moisture into the hair and scalp with effects lasting for several days to a week depending on how dry the hair, scalp, and winter air is.  It should be applied to a freshly shampooed hair and scalp, left on 5-15 minutes, then rinsed thoroughly.  P2 Lite Leave In Conditioner is a lightweight leave-in version of P2 Deep with a similar ingredient structure, making it the perfect styling routine addition for any texture.  But it can also be misted on anytime to stop static or add hydration to hair that has not shampooed for a few days as well as to refresh the style.  Brush, scrunch, blow dry or airdry.  P2 Lite does lightly wet the hair so if concerned about texture reversion we offer another hat hair solution.

Once taking off the hat, unwanted static can be caused by friction between the hat and the hair.  As another option to stop static, we teach our guests to give their hair a light mist of a powder-free hair refresher.  We recommend our P2 by Philip Pelusi RefresHair Texture Spray.  Sunflower Seed Extract calms static while White Tea and Thyme give hair a fabulous fresh scent, helps protect color and creates shine.  P2 RefresHair does not wet the hair and is strictly a dry hair product application.  Mist through then fingerstyle or lightly scrunch hair to revive your style.
